YOUTH DEVELOPMENT BUILDING TOMORROW S LEADERS TODAY Youth need positive adult and peer role models and they also need to feel physically and emotionally safe to thrive In 2016 nearly 28 000 metro Omaha children were directly impacted by our early learning centers swim lessons youth sports STEM programs before after school programs summer day camps and kindergarten readiness classes The impact we make on children s lives goes beyond providing a fun experience teaching a new skill or assisting with homework The Y gives youth the building blocks to become thriving engaged members of society SUMMER CAMP SUMMER CAMP INCREASES independence leadership adventurousness social skills LEARNING AT THE Y Children who attend preschool are more likely to attain more education have higher incomes and have increased learning capacity 617 557 IN 2016 young learners attended full or half day early learning programs IN 2016 97 of students in our after school programs learned teamwork leadership skills students filled the void before after school in our YMCA programs 97 of students in our after school programs feel hopeful about their future 96 of campers say camp helped them make friends 92 of campers say camp increased their self esteem READY IN 5 1919 699 IN 2016 YMCA summer campers developed new friendships 3 IN 2016 refugee parents children were prepared for kindergarten success through Ready in 5 YMCA OF GREATER OMAHA www metroymca org READY TO LEARN 140 IN 2016 caregivers youth learned how to make playtime educational through Ready to Learn 96 of caregivers report that they work on skills outside of the classroom because of Ready to Learn

REACH RISE IMAGINE MENTORING PROGRAM SCIENCE ADOLFO ART S STORY 1167 IN 2016 un served under served students engaged in STEM learning opportunities through Imagine Science a collaborative partnership with Boys Girls Club 4 H and Girls Inc Reach Rise is a one on one therapeutic mentoring program that serves Omaha s at risk youth Through positive support guidance friendship mentors not only influence the youth s current situation but impact their future as well Adolfo his younger brother relocated to the United States two years ago from Guatemala after the disappearance of their father the danger of local gangs They were eventually reunited with their mother began their new life in Omaha Due to the unique difficulties in his life Adolfo had difficultly relating to others He asked for a mentor so he could talk with someone about his experiences without adding extra stress to his mother s life In the year a half since meeting Art his mentor Adolfo has successfully transitioned from the Teen Literacy Center to South High School His attendance is perfect his grades are good He is a more confident young man who exudes joy He is looking toward a bright future When Adolfo arrived he was holding on to a lot of anger about things that happened in his past Since he has had a mentor he is a happier kid He has a better relationship with his brother is more respectful opens up more to me Art being in Adolfo s life has created positive changes in our entire family Adolfo s mother YMCA SUMMER CAMPS PROVIDE SUMMER FUN FOR EVERYONE 4

HEALTHY KIDS DAY In 2016 over 4 000 kids adults attended the FREE event presented by the YMCA of Greater Omaha the National Safety Council Nebraska 5 YMCA OF GREATER OMAHA www metroymca org Because of the Y I can write my name again Cheered 21 000 children in our youth sports programs as they developed new skills built teams D PPE 10 0 I U 00 Healthy Kids Day is the Y s national initiative to improve the health and well being of kids and families The Y supports families in their efforts to teach healthy habits and keep kids active learning preparing them for a brighter future Healthy Kids Day celebrates kids health and continues to teach healthy safe habits for kids and families encourage active play and inspire a lifetime love of physical activity My new goal was to figure out how to improve my life despite the new challenge of Parkinson s disease I knew there had to be more to life than watching TV all day After much research I found out about the Y s Delay the Disease DTD program and quickly enrolled EQ I was diagnosed with Parkinson s in 2013 while I was still working At first I was able to carry on but over the next two years the tremors became an issue and I knew it was time to retire ED 21 00 ER 0 BY BERT SAMSON CH E DELAY THE DISEASE Bert It was by far the best move I ve made I ve made countless friends in my class and a way to improve my life by working out I m not as fast or as good as some of the others but I work hard each week to add the challenge to my daily life My doctor is thrilled with the results and says to keep it up because it s working Thanks to the Y I can keep growing improving and slow down the Parkinson s This class has proved to me that I can do this Equipped 10 000 individuals with life saving knowledge healthy activity in our swim lessons

HEALTHY LIVING IMPROVING THE OMAHA METRO S HEALTH WELL BEING Healthy living is much more than hitting the gym It s a lifestyle encouraged by maintaining wellness reducing risk of chronic disease reclaiming good health and improving quality of life The Y works to improve the health of our community and everyone in it by encouraging a culture of active healthy living for all children adults and families Our impact reaches far beyond our wellness centers We are proud to partner with like minded organizations including CHI Health and Live Well Omaha Our reach also extends into the outdoors with the Let s Move Outdoors initiative and Healthy Kids Day annual community event MEDICALLY BASED WELLNESS LIVESTRONG AT THE YMCA To date the YMCA of Greater Omaha has served over 500 individuals through the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program Of those participants the following have improved or maintained in the following categories 93 AEROBIC FUNCTION 96 STRENGTH DELAY THE DISEASE This evidence based fitness program from Ohio Health led by certified Delay the Disease personal trainers is designed to empower people with Parkinson s disease and other neurological conditions by optimizing their physical function helping to delay the progression of symptoms Research in the area of Parkinson s disease indicates that exercise has been shown to improve self confidence independence decrease the risk of falls minimize fatigue reduce rigidity improve mobility 80 FLEXIBILITY 90 BALANCE YMCA DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM This program is a CDC recognized lifestyle improvement program that empowers adults to make lifestyle changes that will improve their overall health and reduce their chance of developing diabetes Research by the National Institutes of Health has shown that programs like the YMCA s Diabetes Prevention Program reduce the number of new cases of diabetes by 58 overall and by 71 in individuals over age 60 Our 9 health wellness facilities close the exercise gap by supporting all people seeking a healthier lifestyle and greater well being by making healthy living easy accessible and affordable In 2016 93 191 Omaha area adults children made 1 4 MILLION visits to our wellness facilities 6

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY GIVING BACK PROVIDING SUPPORT TO OUR NEIGHBORS The Y is here to elicit positive change in communities bring people together and give them opportunities to make a meaningful difference in their own lives and the lives of others Where some see obstacles within our most vulnerable communities we see opportunities Everyone is welcome at the Y VOLUNTEERS 2862 IN 2016 The success of the Y is due to a great group of volunteers Without the generous gift of their time participation and engagement we would not make the impact we do Our volunteers include board members coaches readers mentors and Strong Communities campaigners ANNUAL THANKSGIVING DINNER In 2016 more than 850 members of the community were treated to a Thanksgiving meal at the South YMCA Program Center Children experienced the center s game room a balloon artist a temporary tattoo station bounce houses a magic show in the theater and more Over 67 Y staff and members of the community donated their time at the event 7 YMCA OF GREATER OMAHA www metroymca org STUFF THE BUS We believe every student deserves the opportunity to succeed in school In 2016 the Y partnered with First National Bank WOWT to provide backpacks filled with supplies to students in need The community generously donated over 450 backpacks the supplies for grades kindergarten 12th The backpacks were distributed at an event at the South YMCA Program Center

DONATE NOW The YMCA of Greater Omaha provided 1 7 MILLION STRONG COMMUNITIES CAMPAIGN FUNDRAISING AT THE YMCA At the Y no child family or adult is turned away We recognize in order for our community to succeed everyone needs an opportunity to become healthy confident connected and secure As part of our commitment the YMCA of Greater Omaha conducts the Strong Communities Campaign each year to raise funds that provide financial assistance to children families and individuals for Y programs and memberships We are honored to provide support to our community through services focused on critical areas such as child welfare community health classroom readiness quality of life and youth family services Support from donors and volunteers strengthen our impact in the community and change lives throughout the Omaha metro area in financial assistance in 2016 25 9 of our Y members are served by financial aid 18 460 IN 2016 individuals in the metro Omaha area were served through financial assistance 2621 470 Of the financial assistance provided 61 39 supported memberships supported youth programming like aquatics sports early learning and out of school programs IN 2016 individuals donated to the Strong Communities Campaign organizations donated to the Strong Communities Campaign corporation foundation or other 8

150 YEARS OF COMMUNITY IMPACT LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR HISTORY REMEMBERING OUR HISTORY 2016 marked 150 years of the YMCA of Greater Omaha listening and responding to our community Our anniversary gave us the opportunity to look fondly on the past celebrate our progress and look ambitiously toward the next 150 years beyond all while focusing on how to leave a lasting positive impact every day 941 310 420 13 100 members of the community were cheered as they lost a combined 9 978 pounds in our first ever community wide Weight Loss Challenge media stories increased our media footprint totaling 1 456 107 in publicity value with the help of a WOWT media partnership attended our Y150 Celebratory Gala at the CenturyLink Ballroom with swimmer Mark Spitz as the keynote speaker At the celebration Mayor Jean Stothert proclaimed October 2016 YMCA of Greater Omaha Month engaged supportive Y150 sponsors collaborated with the Y to impact our communities raising 308 000 with their generous support YMCA supporters marched strong in Omaha s annual St Patrick s Day parade to celebrate our 150 years of providing firsts 9 YMCA OF GREATER OMAHA www metroymca org YMCA OF GREATER OMAHA 150 YEARS OF PROVIDING FIRSTS Exhibit at the Durham Museum October 8 2016 January 8 2017 The YMCA of Greater Omaha s roots in the Omaha metropolitan area are woven into the fabric of the community Our historical impact in the areas of youth development healthy living and social responsibility were showcased with a three month long 100 linear foot exhibit at the Durham Museum
